Humanly speaking, Pastor Sykes would not be where he is today were it not for a faithful bus captain and bus driver who cared enough to pick up a little nine-year-old boy and bring him to church every Sunday. Week after week, those faithful servants of God invested in his life without knowing what God would one day do — a reminder that no act of service for the Lord is ever wasted. At the age of eleven, at the close of a Sunday School class, he came to understand that he was a sinner in need of a Saviour, and trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour that day. It was the greatest decision of his life.
In March of 1994, God blessed Pastor Sykes with his wonderful wife, Kimberly, and together they began a new chapter of life in Trinity, North Carolina, joining Fellowship Bible Baptist Church. It was there that his understanding of Scripture grew and his love for the local church flourished. The Lord later led the Sykes family to Trulite Baptist Church in High Point, North Carolina, where the faithful preaching and teaching of God's Word continued to mature their faith and confirm His direction for their lives. In 2004, God clearly called the family to New Mexico with a burden to plant Bible-believing churches.
By God's grace, Pastor Sykes has been allowed to be involved in planting three churches in New Mexico:
In 2013, God led the Sykes family to establish Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, and it has since been Pastor Sykes's joy and privilege to serve as pastor of this wonderful church family — watching the Lord save souls, strengthen families, and change lives through the preaching of His Word.
The vision God has placed on Pastor Sykes's heart for Mt. Calvary Baptist Church is both simple and biblical — to be a church where Jesus Christ is exalted, the Bible is faithfully preached, and people are lovingly discipled. The church's desire is to reach the community with the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ, strengthen Christian homes through sound biblical teaching, and help every believer grow into a mature follower of Christ. Whether through worship, discipleship, missions, or outreach, the prayer is that Mt. Calvary will continue to be a lighthouse of hope in Deming and throughout southern New Mexico for generations to come.

Pastor Sykes and his wife, Kimberly, were married in March of 1994 and have walked together in ministry ever since — from their early years serving in North Carolina to planting churches across New Mexico. They are deeply committed to the ministry of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and to serving the families of this congregation.
